New mandatory national standards for protective footwear will take effect on September 1, 2026, marking a comprehensive upgrade to safety, performance, and lifecycle management requirements for the labor protection footwear industry.
The revised GB 28409-2025 Foot Protection – Equipment Selection, Use and Maintenance and GB 20098-2025 Foot Protection – General Technical Specifications will replace the old standards, raising mandatory requirements for core performance indicators including impact resistance, puncture resistance, slip resistance, and chemical resistance. The new standards also add clear provisions on wearer adaptability and full lifecycle management of protective footwear.
A transition period is set to end on September 1, 2026, requiring all relevant enterprises to complete technological and product upgrades before the implementation date.
In parallel, the specialized standard GB 46308-2025 on puncture-resistant pads will be fully implemented, strengthening performance indicators for puncture protection and strictly controlling limits on hazardous substances such as phthalates and heavy metals in materials. The standard also promotes the popularization of green and low-carbon product certification.
The standard upgrades aim to further improve workplace foot protection, drive technological innovation in the industry, and encourage the development of safer, more comfortable, and more environmentally friendly protective footwear products.
